Insulation

 INSULATION

It’s mostly not worth doing insulation yourself after you price out materials + your labor time. 2 local companies to me are: Taylor & Lilienthal.

The only reason I ended up doing most of the insulation myself was because of time + scheduling. When I reached out to both companies for bids it was going to delay my project 8-10 weeks because of how busy everyone was. With good help I was able to insulation my entire house in 3 big days myself.

What I did end up using Taylor Insulation for was closed cell spray foam in the crawl space around the rim board + laying down ground plastic. That cost $800. I found it worth paying for the closed cell because it greats an air tight seal around your house + you don’t have cut it yourself!

It’s difficult to impossible to schedule insulation install before you are truly ready for it. It look me longer than anticipated to get my plywood on the roof + underlayment. So when I was ready I ended up renting a 20’ U-haul truck and made a trip to Lowe’s. This allowed me to keep my project moving forward onto drywall.

For my exterior walls I used Faced Fiberglass R21 & on my interior walls I used a wool product called Safe N’ Sound. That is a small upgrade that I think it worth it to make your interior walls more solid and less echo. If you buy in bulk at Lowe’s you do get 30% off, which adds up.

For my attic space I blew in fiberglass to R60. This is cheap and effective solution. My local build center provides a free rental when you purchase the insulation.

Below you can see the interior wall wool insulation, this stuff goes up easy:

R21 insulation installed on the exterior walls. This is basic and straight forward as it gets. With the exterior ZipR 9.6 this is a cost effective solution for insulation.

Before you hang the insulation I do recommend air sealing all of the electrical outlet boxes.
